Our Story
Oluyomi Bakare’s sickle cell foundation was born out of the inspiration of the impactful life of Dr. (Mrs.) Oluyomi Bakare.
She was born to the late Chief Samuel Adebayo Okunola and Mrs. Beatrice Olusola Okunola (nee Oloyede) on January 22, 1975, in Ibadan, Nigeria. Oluyomi was born the last of seven children. She was born with sickle cell (SS), but she never allowed this painful and life-threatening condition to stop her from pursuing her God-given life goals. (Insert childhood pictures)

She obtained a BS degree in Chemistry from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, followed by an MSc degree in Chemistry from Howard University in Washington DC. Oluyomi received her Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Maryland, College Park. (Insert graduation picture)
After her Ph.D. degree, Dr. Oluyomi Bakare researched as an IRTA Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Molecular Targets and Medications Discovery Branch of the National Institute on Drug Abuse. She subsequently joined the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2015 as a Review Chemist where she worked until she transitioned to glory. Oluyomi Bakare loved the Lord Jesus Christ and greatly loved people.
Dr. Oluyomi Bakare loved singing in the choir and was part of the worship team at New Covenant Church, Hyattsville for several years. Oluyomi was also part of the choir at Trinity Baptist Church, Hyattsville, where she led praise and worship as a member for a few years.
